Alyssum Mission Statement
The mission of Alyssum, Inc. is to provide a peer-operated holistic approach to mental wellness and recovery for Vermonters who are experiencing mental health crisis. This alternative to psychiatric hospitalization will provide a safe, mutually supportive, non-judgmental, educational, and self-empowering environment. Alyssum will afford individuals the opportunity to engage in the principles of wellness, recovery, and peer support and to emerge from crisis with wisdom and the personal responsibility skills for living well.
Alyssum offers a stay for up to two weeks for a crisis respite in a peaceful, home-like setting. Our small house has two private bedrooms, and is centrally located for easy access. Home cooking and meals are included in the stay.
Alyssum is funded by a Grant from the State of Vermont and is free to all Vermonters.
Guests coming to Alyssum will find a welcoming and safe environment in which to connect, explore and transform. We offer a voluntary opportunity to experience a non-judgmental, accepting and validating environment in which there is opportunity to form connection and relationship with peers. All Alyssum's peer staff have lived experience of crisis, trauma and mental and emotional challenges, and are open in sharing their stories of healing and transformation. Together we reflect on what we do know, and we work together to strengthen our own positive inner qualities and to re-empower ourselves. We know that everyone is capable and inherently knows what they need, and we know mental and emotional crisis can be a turning point which can bring growth and positive change.
Alyssum's staff is trauma informed and recognizes the value of individual paths, and individual coping mechanisms. Alyssum's non-hierarchal environment allows guests and staff to experience learning and growth together. Alyssum staff may also share their working knowledge of alternative healing methods which include such things as yoga, nature, mindfulness, gardening, meditation, body energy healing and art projects.
